We are excited to start the 2016 - 2017 school year! Our first few days and weeks of school are intentionally designed to introduce students to the ideas of our school culture. While the school days will still begin at 8:05am and end 3:10pm, we have a arranged the schedule differently for the first few days. The details of those days are below:
September 1st - Creative Process with Advisory
All students will engage in the challenge of completing a collaborative project in one day. This low-stakes, high-fun creative experience will help students get to know their Advisory groups and provide an introduction to the creative process. The day will begin with inspiration at The John Michael Kohler Arts Center using Thinking Routines. Each Advisory will create a product that interprets a school wide theme developed from shared thinking after inspiration. (The Maker Movement is among us and the benefits such as student engagement, tinkering and innovation are pouring out of research publications like Edutopia.)
Schedule
September 2nd - Service Learning Day
On the second day of school, each grade level will provide service to the Sheboygan community in various locations:
8th graders at Habitat Restore
6th graders at Sheboygan River Area of Concern
7th graders at Nourish and the Nourish Urban Farm
We will begin the day getting to know the organizations and setting personal intentions related to the service. While this day is another opportunity to build community, it is also a way for students to understand their own habits and develop long term goals. Student will reflect on Service Learning Day in a way that connects students’ intentions with their academic goals for the year. (We encourage students to bring a lunch from home on this day, but we will also have bag lunches available from the school district.)
Permission Slips for 6th grade, 7th grade or 8th grade. (Most families signed permission slips at registration. However, if you do not recall signing one, please stop in our school office to do so or print ad sign one from the links above.)
Schedule
September 6th - Camp Anokijig
Students will experience team building through camp activities such as fire building, war canoe races, blind hunter, and a low ropes course. These experiences and the reflective practices that support them are meant to challenge and connect Advisory groups, providing an anchor experience when they are challenged in the future. Camp Anokijig Outdoor Education and The Étude Group continue to collaborate to to enrich our community.
Permission Slips for all Mosaic students. (Most families signed permission slips at registration. However, if you do not recall signing one, please stop in our school office to do so or print ad sign one from the links above.)
Schedule
September 7th - 9th - Introduction to Mosaic
The rest of the week will be spent at school, with introductions to projects, seminars, academics, advisory, and all of the cultural aspects of The Mosaic School. The daily schedules will start and end with advisory to adjust to school supported, in a small group setting, with the ability to ask questions and will be different each day. We will follow a regular schedule starting on Monday, September 12th.

MAKER Break, the creative makerspace program developed by The Étude Group’s IDEAS Academy and The ARTery of the John Michael Kohler Art Center, was a featured program at the August 11th Levitt Amp Sheboygan Summer Music Series.
We are excited to announce a free summer makerspace program developed by IDEAS Academy[ideas/] and The ARTery of The John Michael Kohler Arts Center. MAKER BREAK is a series of summer workshops and sessions that explore a wide range of making practices and activities. Participants can explore everything from circuitry and mic building at IDEAS Academy to knotsmanship and screenprinting in The ARTery.
Zoe Farrell is a sophomore at IDEAS Academy and a writing apprentice for the Étude Studios. She took time from completing her own Exhibition of Learning (EOL) this week to share an article on the process students follow and some of their projects.
Abigail, a middle school student at Mosaic, began her Exhibition of Learning (EOL) with an introduction to the project process and a 3-2-1 bridge. She asked those in attendance to share three short explanations for the creative process in all art forms; two questions they still held about the creative process in all art forms; and one analogy for the creative process in the art forms. This component was valuable in preparing the audience for her creative interpretation of the topic.
All Mosaic School students sampled college and career choices April 27 when they toured local post-secondary schools and a community giant.
There is a lot of talk in education these days about “makerspaces.” It seems to be a new buzz word. The reality is that while it may be a new concept for some in the education community, it’s one of the foundations for The Étude Group. While the concepts of making and creating are not new for us, our role in sharing this concept at a greater level with the community is.
Help us share the great things that happen at The Mosaic School by inviting your friends and families to attend our Information Night on Thursday, April 21st from 6:00-7:30 p.m. in room 3402. This will be the final Information Night, so please join us!
The Mosaic School is hosting a final Shadow Day on Thursday, March 17th.
