Sheboygan, WI– The Étude Group and John Michael Kohler Arts Center announce a second year of MAKER Break, a free program for children and young adults that fosters learning through making.
The program begins on Saturday, Feb. 18. In a painting and collage workshop, parents and children ages 3-7 can explore colors, shapes, lines, and textures that represent people close to them as they create a unique and meaningful “family portrait.” A Lego Early Simple Machines workshop will be offered on Saturday, March 11. In this workshop, parents and children ages 3-7 will be able to explore and learn as parent/child teams use Legos to solve a problem.
Both workshops will be held at 3508 N. 21st St and run from 9:00 - 11:00am. Participants should RSVP online if they plan to attend.
Additional workshops and open makerspaces will be available during the Sheboygan Area School District’s spring break, March 25th through April 2nd. (Details will be announced on our website March 10th.) Free programming will continue throughout the summer thanks to a generous $15,000 grant from The Black Spring Foundation.
MAKER Break will enroll a group of high school Maker Corps Members who will spend the spring engaging in making practices and developing an original workshop for the summer program. There are paid and unpaid opportunities for high school students to pursue one of their passions, participate in a community of people who love making, and develop leadership skills. Applications for high school Maker Corps Members will be available on the MAKER Break website Feb. 10.
MAKER Break is part of a larger movement in education that recognizes the value of hands-on learning and works to provide equitable access to experiences that empower young people through problem solving, divergent thinking, and resilience. The Maker Education organization has selected MAKER Break as an official Maker Corps Partner Site for 2017. The Exploratorium in San Francisco, Hive NYC Learning Network, and The Bubbler at Madison Public Library are previous partner sites.
MAKER Break is currently seeking community partners for a variety of support and hands-on roles this summer. The story of Sheboygan County is deeply rooted in an ethic of making. From manufacturing products to creating experiences, local children have an increasingly diverse economy to explore as they learn about themselves and make decisions about their futures. MAKER Break will ignite that exploration by bringing children, tools, and experts together in facilitated workshops and open makerspaces designed for learning.
