Tenth graders and interested seniors will tour the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) and the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) Wednesday, November 12, as part of the IDEAS Academy College Readiness Program.
MSOE offers its students immediate immersion in the fields of engineering and in the new nursing school. Students will see classrooms in action, walk through labs, view the new athletic facilities and stroll the campus layout to locate dorms and galleries. MIAD provides studio space in multiple genres of visual art for its students. Students will see active classrooms, animation studios, galleries and works in progress in everything from charcoal to clay to advertising to industrial design. Representatives at both schools will discuss the admissions process with students and answer questions.
Permission slips were collected during the Sophomore Institute last Thursday. At this meeting students shared what they already know about these colleges and questions they plan to ask during the tours. They also learned the itinerary for the day.
One special feature of this trip is lunch in the Third Ward. To gain experience in being college students with freedom, IDEAS students will explore this arts and eateries neighborhood in small groups. They may bring money for restaurants or The Milwaukee Public Market, or they may pack a lunch or order a school lunch to bring along. All will have maps (and their phones) to guide them.
A follow-up meeting the day after the trip will help students reflect on the tours and build their ability to make good decisions about their futures.
We are looking forward to this trip!!
Please note: Our college tour transportation is funded by the Étude Sessions Concert Series!
See you at Paradigm, Saturday, November 29, at 8 p.m., for J.E. Sundee + Kalispell!
